First Script
by Frances
This was at least the fourth edition of this script. It went through a lot of changes. I even came up with an entirely different intro after this script which I will include at the end. This is the script we did not end up using. If you've seen the road show we did, you will see a lot of the same elements in this play. I hope you enjoy reading it.
Script #4
(The Doctor, Noah and Julie emerge from the TARDIS. Noah is wringing his hands. He's worried.)
Doctor: Noah, I promise we'll get you back before the water dries up. Besides, it's just started to rain. I've read the book and I know you have at least another 40 days on the boat. Your family won't miss you for a couple of minutes.
Noah: Okay, but I don't think we are back at the time of the dinosaurs. (Noah is looking around at the audience, shielding his eyes so he can see better.)
Julie: Uh, Doctor, he's right. Definitely no dinosaurs here.
Doctor: That's because (He hits a small TARDIS device in his hand.) there's a small problem with the TARDIS. We're off course.
Noah (to Julie): Who are you guys again?
Julie: He's the Doctor, a traveling Time Lord. He travels through time and the galaxy.
Doctor: Yes, and when I get this fixed, we can head back and see the dinosaurs. I know I can convince you to let them on the boat.
Noah: I already told you that's impossible. They're too big and besides, I get my direction from a higher source. (Noah looks up to heaven, perhaps some heavenly music is heard.) (He continues to look up while the Doctor tinkers with his device.)
Doctor: Okay, okay just let me get this thing fixed and then I'll take you home.
Noah: I have some news for you from my higher source. (Indicates heaven again) You will soon meet two women who have a very important message for you. Listen to them. It will change your life.
Doctor(while tinkering with his device): Okay, got it. Two women. Listen to them. And it's fixed. Let's take you back home Noah.
Noah: Thank-you and don't forget about the two women.
Julie: I'll remember.
Doctor: (pushing Noah and Julie into the time machine) Sheesh, I'll remember. Now let's go. (closes TARDIS door and the lights dim or swirl and the light on top of the TARDIS goes on.)
(Sister walks onto stage. She marches backwards with Book of Mormon firmly displayed in hand. Calling out to her companion behind her with her other hand gesturing to companion to hurry up.)
First sister missionary: Come on sister! We’ve got work to do! Just one more contact. One more week on top!
(Second sister emerges from the side with compact in hand. Walking distractedly.)
Second sister missionary: 15 out of 16 first discussions is A-okay with me sister. We beat the Zone Leaders last week and the week before. Give ‘em a chance Sister.
(First sister stops, somehow the TARDIS appears or is there already and the Doctor and his Julie emerge from the TARDIS behind her.)
First sister missionary (turns slightly toward the audience): Sister, we are on the Lord’s errand. Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God! How great shall be your joy if you but bring ONE soul unto me. Save it shall be ONE soul. ONE soul sister! Let’s find the ONE!
(In midst of religious fervor and tirade Second sister notices the Tartus, the Doctor and Noah and attempts to get the sister’s attention.)
Second Sister: Ummmm…..uhhhhhh Sister……..How ‘bout him? (Dr. Who tinkering on Tartus behind them.)
First Sister: Ohh! (Walks over to the Doctor and his companion.) Hi! We're missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Doctor (mostly to his Julie): Ahhh, two young women who have a message for me, right?
First sister: Yes, (hesitantly) we have a message for you about Jesus Christ and a book of scripture called the Book of Mormon. (She holds up the Book of Mormon for them to see.)
Doctor: Well, I've met Jesus Christ but I don't know anything about this book from Mormon. Come tell me about it.
Second Sister: But we don't even know your name.
Doctor: It's the Doctor and this is what I do. I travel through time. Now get inside. I don't have much time. (The doctor gives a big push and they all go inside the TARDIS.)
(Lights go dark except for the light above the booth. The curtain is pulled back. When lights go on again the Doctor, sisters and Julie exit the phone booth. They see that Helaman is talking to a group of the people of Ammon.)
Second Sister: I'm still not sure I know what's going on. (The other sister nods her head as well.)
Doctor: Well, we've traveled to 64 BC to see those stripling sons it talks about in that book from Mormon.
First Sister: It's the Book of Mormon.
Second Sister: Ohhh, I still don't understand.
Companion: Sometimes you just need a little faith. Look. (She points to Helaman and the Ammonites.)
Helaman: I cannot let you go to battle for I fear God will punish us more if we allow you to break your covenant than if we just continue to try and fight with our limited numbers.
Ammonite boy #1 stands up: Helaman is right. Our fathers must not fight. God would surely punish us if you did.
Ammonite boy #2 stands us: But we can fight ( he gestures to the boys in the group who all stand up), your sons can fight.
(Fathers seem confused/concerned/distraught by idea)
Ammonite boy #3 (trying to reassure the fathers): We have been trained by you, we are strong and we have not made a covenant. We are young, but we are willing.
(Boys nod their heads)
Ammonite son #1: With God's help, and Helaman as our leader (he gestures to Helaman who nods his head), we can do anything.
(Boys gather as a group to the right and the rest of the group moves to the left of the stage.)
Dance to Seize the Day
(Lights go down on the right of the stage, everyone exits the stage and begin setting the stage for the next scene as the Sister missionaries, the Doctor and Julie continue talking outside the booth at the front of the stage.
Julie: Wow! What happens to those kids?
First Sister: They actually fight a lot of battles and are one of the main reasons the families and country are saved from destruction.
Second Sister: And a really interesting thing about them is that none of them die in battle. All 2,000 survive the war to return home to their families.
Julie: Doctor, did you hear that?
Doctor: Yes and I'm going to read this book. (He holds it up) Now I don't want to seem impatient but our time is ticking away. I know someone in the universe is going to need me soon. Let's move onto your church. Tell me about it.
First Sister: Well, we meet every Sunday for 3 hours.
Julie (incredulously looking at Dr. Who): Three hours? Every week for three hours?
Second Sister: Yes, and then during the week...
Interrupted by the Doctor: You mean you go to church for three hours and then you still meet during the week?
Second Sister: Yes, during the week there are young men and young women activities, cub scouts and activity days and then the youth of the church attend an early morning religion class before going to high school.
Julie: What? They get up early in the morning to study your religion before school on top of the three hours they spend in church and all those other things you listed.
Second Sister: I know. Hard to believe, but they do.
Doctor: I have to see this. Let's go to tomorrow's class. (He pushes them all back into the TARDIS. The lights go dim except the light on the TARDIS. Girls get into their beds. Song starts.)
(It's a hard knock life ending with everyone in seminary class pretending their learning. The sister missionaries, the Doctor and Julie exit the TARDIS and stand in the back of the room observing. There will be a chalkboard with service and D&C 4:2 written on it.)
Seminary teacher: Okay class, we've talked about service today and I'd like to end class with the scripture found in Doctrine and Covenants chapter 4, verse 2. Anyone have that memorized?
Student #1 raises hand and starts: Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day.
Seminary teacher: Thank-you. Who can give us a good example of serving God with all your heart, might, mind and strength?
Student #2 raises hand: Missionaries.
Seminary teacher: A perfect example.
Student #3: Yes and they're actually right behind you sir.
Seminary teacher: Ahhh, the sisters are here with someone. What a surprise! Come in, come in.
First Sister: Actually we can't. We just wanted to stop by to show our investigators a seminary class.
Second Sister: And, now we'll be going. Sorry to have disturbed your class.
Seminary teacher: No, no, no problem. We're just ending for the day. See you on Sunday and we hope to see your new friends as well. Okay, everyone gather everything up and let's leave this room spotless.
(Sisters and Julie wave, the Doctor nods his head and they head back toward the time machine at the front of the stage. The kids each fold up their chairs and take them with them while the lights go down except over the TARDIS and the sisters, Doctor and Julie. The seminary teacher will wheel off the chalkboard.)
Doctor: That really is remarkable. All those kids up and studying scriptures every morning, often before the sun even gets up.
Julie: You wouldn't have caught me doing that when I was a teenager.
Doctor: So, you read the scriptures, the Bible and the Book from Mormon.
First Sister: The book OF Mormon. (she says it correctingly) And we read it every day.
Second Sister: And we also have additional scripture such as the Doctrine and Covenants that the kids were learning about in seminary.
Doctor: You read lots of scriptures, every day, go to church, every Sunday for three hours, do lots of stuff during the week, including seminary every single morning before most teenagers are moving. Do you do anything normal in your church?
First Sister: Well, yes we do a lot of normal things as well.
Second Sister: We play sports, we read, we play games, we dance.
Doctor: You're allowed to dance? Do you even have time for that?
First Sister: Yes, actually the youth have dances quite regularly.
Julie: Ooooooooh, let's go to a dance. It's been such a long time since I've been to a dance.
Doctor: Wait, I just remembered I know how to dance.
Julie looks pleadingly with hands held together.
Doctor: Okay, but let's check out those Mormon kids in the 1950s. I just remembered I love swing dancing!
(The Doctor pushes some things on his device and they all get into the TARDIS. Lights go off. While lights are off, kids get in their places and the inside phone booth set is removed. The phone booth moves to the back of the stage. When the lights go on, they kids are dancing and the music ends. Girls move to the right side of the stage and the boys to the left. They're milling around and talking. Everyone exits the phone booth while the discussion is happening. )
Girl 1: Hank sure is cute tonight.
Girl 2: You think Hank is cute every night.
Girl 1: Well, he is. (she says dreamily)
Girl 3: Has he asked you to dance yet?
Girl 1: Not yet, but maybe the next dance.
Girl 4: I just want to dance. I don't care who asks me.
Girl 5: Sure, I don't believe that at all. You're just dying to dance with Charlie, aren't you?
Girl 4: Well, maybe I am, but as long as I'm dancing, it doesn't matter.
Girls continue to chatter among themselves but mics are now on the boys.
Boy 1: Anyone watch the high school baseball game yesterday. We totally smoked North High!
Boy 2: I couldn't. I had to do yard work. What was the score?
Boy 1: It was 6 to 1.
Boy 3: Any home runs?
Boy 1: No but there was a triple in the seventh inning that knocked two guys in.
Boy 4: Wish I could have been there! Ah man, I think they're going to start the music up again soon. Who you gonna ask to dance?
Boy 5: I don't know, I guess whoever's lookin' at me.
Boy 6: There's the music starting up. (He wipes his hands on his pants.) Okay boys, let's go ask them to dance.
(All the boys wipe their hands on their pants and the boys all converge on girls, everyone starts pairing up. Couples enter from the side of the gym as well to dance in front of the stage.)
Julie: It looks like not much has changed in 60 years.
Doctor: Oh, but it has. This is back when they still danced together in a synchronized dance form. It is beautiful. (He holds out his hand to her) Dance with me?
Julie: Sure (and she takes his hand and they move onto the dance floor)
All the couples are starting their dance and the sisters stand off to the right. They do a swing dance to Johnny Be Good by Chuck Berry. 2 min.
(Music ends and everyone cheers and claps. Doctor and Julie walk back over to the sisters.)
Doctor: Ladies, it's time to get you back. (He hustles them all into the phone booth. The lights go dark except for one above the booth. Everyone scatters from the stage and the light post is put back on stage. They are back.)
Doctor emerges from the booth with the sisters.
Doctor: Sister, I enjoyed tonight. I learned a lot about you Mormons. You read the Book OF Mormon.
First Sister: And the Bible and other scriptures.
Doctor: Yes, you read a lot of scripture, you go to church a lot, you even go to church during the week and yet you're still normal and do things like dancing. That's a religion I want to look into more but right now, (he looks down at his device) I've got to answer a distress call from.... It was nice meeting you. I'll be back to learn more. (He turns back into the phone booth without giving them a chance to say anything.)
(The sister missionaries look at each other.)
Second Sister: Did that just really happen?
First Sister: Yes it did.
(Sisters begin walking off the stage)
Second Sister: Are we going to count this as a first discussion?
First Sister: Of course we are!
Second Sister: What are we going to do when he comes back?
First Sister: Refer him to the elders!
Curtain closes.
A different start for the same play:
Dr. Who Meets the Mormons (Storybook start)
(Actions being shown on a screen, filmed beforehand that go with the story. They should be still pictures, like the pictures you find in a book.) Narrator (holding a big Dr. Who meets the missionaries book) reads: Once Upon A Time there was the Doctor (dramatic pause), a Time Lord traveler from the planet Gallifrey. His job was to go around the universe, saving the world, one disaster at a time... and although he loved his job, he often wanted to save more than just the world, he wanted to save souls but he didn't know how. He rescued people from all kinds of disasters, but he wanted to do more. One day, in his travels, he encountered two missionaries who had rushed into his time machine while dodging a very large dog. They got the surprise of their lives when the phone booth turned out to be a time machine that the Doctor and his companion, Julie, used to travel through time and space. The sisters told the Doctor they had a very important message to share with the doctor and Julie. They taught them all about the Book of Mormon. They shared their testimonies. The spirit was felt but the Doctor was never one to just sit around. (begin to open curtains) He wanted to see things so he asked one of the sisters what their favorite story was in the book they had given him and they were off to 64 BC and the 2000 stripling warriors...
(The stage is set with Helaman and the people of Ammon when lights go on. The TARDIS is off to the side and the doctor, the sisters and Julie come out while Helaman is speaking. )
Helaman: I cannot let you go to battle for I fear God will punish us more if we allow you to break your covenant than if we just continue to try and fight with our limited numbers.
