It sleeps in the closet
In deceitful repose
Silent and somber
A terrible foe
For now I am safe
The door is shut tight
Those dark closet walls
Imprison the fright
But the beast can smell fear,
Spilt snacks and small toes
And a mid morning tumble
Made me spill my cheerios
With a sigh mother walks
To his dark prison door
I know what is coming
I’ve seen it before
She unwinds its tail
Like a long grey snake
Then like a chained beast
To the wall he was staked
With a terrible roar
The beast comes alive
With a yelp and a screech
To the sofa I dive
It paces the room
That ravenous beast
Devouring my cereal
For his mid-day feast
And then with a gasp
I see in his path
My faithful blue blanket
Do I dare face his wrath?
I gather my courage
I swallow my fear
For I am a warrior!
My moment is here!!
I unsheathe my sword
Scale the back of the couch
Destiny is waiting
Poised and ready I crouch
With a savage cry
I leap in the air
Roll onto the rug
In the beast’s bright glare
I snatch up my blanket
And brandish my sword
The beast rears, letting out
A terrible roar!
I slash to the left and
I slash to the right
I swing my sword madly
With my eyes shut tight
With a squeal and a screech
I leap to the couch
And slide quickly behind
Where panting I slouch
The monster is growling
It wants something to munch
But gives up its quarry
I’m too quick to be lunch
It stalks to the bedroom
Seeking new prey to eat
I have vanquished my foe
My mission’s complete
With a sigh of relief
I hug blanket dear
I have beat the mad beast!
I have conquered my fear!!
