Was it really possible she might lose her family if she chose one of the alternate realities? Was she even guaranteed she would have her family back if she chose her current reality and somehow figured out how to get out of this cave? Could she ever even get home again? There seemed to be no guarantees. Catherine tried to remember if she’d seen Zach, Gus or Sloane in any of the movies and she couldn’t remember having seen them at all, including her current reality. Her current movie reality seemed to skip over that aspect of her life. She had seen her mom, dad and sister but not her husband, son or daughter. Why not? Maybe they were a part of each of her realities but they were kept hidden from her. She hoped they had not been there in some of the more horrific realities. There were still too many questions and she did not know what to do.
The movies were all at a current stand still except the one she was directly in front of, her current reality. It was a reflection of what she was doing right then, standing lost and alone in a cave. She walked closer to the projection and in her frustration threw her hands down by her side and yelled, “Show me what to do!”
Catherine’s movie started up abruptly and she saw herself in the cave walking over to the picture of herself on a horse looking smug. She watched as she bent down, unlocked the door and went through the door.
“What the heck?” Catherine said as she sat down on the ground. “What am I supposed to do now?”
“I thought that should have been apparent,” said a woman’s voice from directly behind Catherine.
Catherine whipped her head around to see a stunning woman dressed all in black standing right behind her. Catherine scrambled to her feet and stared at the lady wondering how she got into this room without making a sound.
“Who, who are you?” asked Catherine.
“I am also one of the three Ancient Origins, the sage of What Should Be. You asked me what you should do and I showed you where your future lies and yet you sat down and did nothing but pose more questions. I thought you might be more dimwitted than most humans so I came to help.”
“Excuse me,” said Catherine. Now she was getting perturbed. This lady was rather rude. Although if Catherine had thought about it she might admit to herself, but only to herself, that she was not quite functioning at her best at the moment. “Why should I listen to you?”
“I could try telling you the same thing another way or say my words slower but I rather doubt that would make a difference. Do you have a key, dear?” She said the last question loud and slow and the sound was reverberating off the walls. She held her hand out to Catherine, waiting for the key.
“I’m not an idiot,” said Catherine in response to the lady’s obvious dismissal of her intellectual abilities.
“Really?” said the sage. “Then, please, show me how smart you are by pulling out your key and opening the door. I do have other humans to attend to today.”
“But I don’t understand…”
“I know dear, just use the key and go through the door. On the other side is the reality that should be happening. That’s why I’m here and why you got the keys. Things need to be fixed. It happens way too often but we’ve devised a way to fix it. The life you should have is on the other side of the door. Go through and enjoy,” said the sage.
“But the other sage, the sage of What Could Be said I have a quest to complete.”
“He’s a dramatic one. He’s always going on about quests and people think they have to go save the world. Your quest is to get your real life back on track, the life you were destined to live. Somehow you got off your track, as I said, it happens. The other movies you watched are other realities you might have lived had you made other choices. They were all possibilities.”
This made Catherine shudder. Some of them were pretty gruesome.
The sage continued, “You made some good choices in your life but you got derailed. We’re here to help. Now the key,” said the sage as she gestured toward the door.
“Yes, but what about my family, my husband and children. I haven’t seen them in any of these realities, just my parents and sister.”
“Parents and siblings you are born into and are not a choice. Husbands and children are choices so they are not guaranteed to be in each of the realities and because of this they are not in any of the realities. They are left, as you say on earth, on the cutting floor.”
“Yes, but are they in this new life of mine.”
“I cannot say but you must think on whether they were a good, better or best choice in your life. Your best choices can be found in each of the realities.”
Then they must be there, thought Catherine. They are three of my best choices ever! “Okay, I’m ready,” said Catherine.
“Good, then put the key in the door,” said the sage.
Catherine inserted the key and turned the knob. The door swung open and Catherine walked forward and stood in the doorway. “But, then what’s my other key for?” she asked.
“You will need it to leave our realm and live out the long life you have ahead of you if you make it past the last sage,” said the sage of What Should Be as she closed the door on Catherine.
